And so it begins…..

I love to eat.  I love to talk.  So I might as well combine the two here and share my rambling thoughts right?!  What to chat about on my first BetterWithFood post I’ve been thinking……I have so many food thoughts, experiences, memories I am excited to share with you…just not that many pictures.  And who doesn’t love a blog with cool pics right?!  Well…rather than wait until I unearth pictures…or get savvy with my iphone, we might as well start chatting.  I might grab a google image here and there to get my memory out, but hopefully over time you will see more and more beautiful pictures come across BetterWithFood.

Pizza has been a topic on my business page as of late, and it really got me thinking of my pizza memories!  You know what I remembered?!  LAWERENCE WELK! haha  250px-Mancinimercer003

Oh man…Saturday night’s were pizza, Lawerence Welk and shared baths (will chat more on that in a bit!)  It was a ritual and like clock work. The pizzas were always homemade and group effort.  I still remember the dough recipe:

  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 1/2 cups flour (or so until it ‘felt’ right)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons oil

The toppings usually varied…but always included hamburger since we had a freezer full.  And I remember my mom suggesting experiements  like ‘let’s try the toppings on top of the cheese this time’….guess we were a ‘cheese on top’ family before that.

So back to the routine…the pizza process would start, three kids would cycle through the same bath water!!  Yes…let me repeat in case there are any millennials reading this…myself and my two brothers shared the same bath water. I like to think I was always the first being the only girl..but my memory cannot verify that.  All I know is you never wanted to be last (for obvious reasons)..but also because it was COLD water by that point LOL. Oh man…then we wonder why dad always took a shower down in the dark basement..anything was better then that I’m guessing.

I digress…back to pizza.  We really got fancy when we upgraded to this pizza pan with holes in it.  This was way before stoneware or the trendy grilled pizza we make now.  But man that pizza pan with holes in it was MESSY (little crumb pieces fell out the bottom all other the place) but good and crunchy.

So pizza was served and we all zoned in on Lawerence Welk.  We only had 3 – 4 TV channels and no remote…so this was the show of choice for everbody in the room.  #imagine  And….I am pretty sure my mom had a crush on Tom Netherton.  We always had to sit and ‘really’ listen when he was performing…plus I have her album now to prove it! (he always wore a flashy knit leisure suit during his solo)

Doesn’t thinking of food just bubble up a ton of memories for you?!  Life truly is BetterWithFood.    I trust you will continue or start a pizza tradition for your famiy soon!
